What should your website actually be doing for your business?

Website updates, design, marketing and all those everyday tasks that need doing – but probably shouldn’t be taking up your time.

Every business has them.

The website update you’ve been meaning to make for three weeks. The new brochure that still needs finishing. The landing page for next month’s promotion. The email template that doesn’t quite look right. The dozen other jobs sitting somewhere between important and I’ll get to it eventually.

None of them necessarily justify hiring another full-time employee. But they still need doing.

That’s where flexible, outsourced support can make a lot of sense.

Instead of trying to do everything yourself – or adding another permanent salary to the payroll – you can bring in the right skills when you actually need them.

Here are 10 reasons why.

1. You stop paying for skills you don’t need full-time

Cost Savings

Hiring a developer, designer and marketing person gives you plenty of capability.

It also gives you three salaries.

For many small and medium-sized businesses, that simply doesn’t make sense.

Outsourcing lets you bring in specialist skills when they’re needed. You might need a developer for a few hours this month, design support next week and help putting together a landing page after that.

You pay for the work you need rather than building an entire department around it.

2. You get access to more than one skill set

Access to Specialised Expertise

One of the problems with hiring for a broad digital role is expecting one person to be brilliant at everything.

Web development. Graphic design. UX. Email marketing. SEO. Landing pages. Analytics. CRM. Automation.

That’s quite a job description.

Working with an external team gives you access to different people and different skills depending on what’s actually required.

A developer can deal with the technical problem. A designer can make it look right. Someone else can help connect the form to your CRM.

You don’t have to find one mythical employee who does everything.

3. You get your time back

This is probably the biggest one.

Just because you can spend two hours figuring out how to change something on your website doesn’t mean you should.

Your time has a value.

If you’re running the business, selling, managing clients or developing your next product, spending half the afternoon wrestling with WordPress isn’t necessarily a great use of it.

Hand the job to somebody who already knows how to do it and get on with the things only you can do.

4. Things actually get finished

Round-the-Clock Availability

Small jobs have an annoying habit of hanging around.

Nobody quite owns them, they’re never urgent enough to reach the top of the list and six weeks later somebody says:

“Didn’t we say we were going to change that?”

Outsourced support gives those jobs somewhere to go.

Instead of maintaining an ever-growing list of things you’ll eventually get around to, you can simply send them over and get them done.

Sometimes that’s more valuable than any grand digital strategy.

5. The quality is usually better than DIY

Improved Quality and Consistency

There are plenty of things you can figure out yourself.

Canva exists. WordPress isn’t exactly nuclear engineering. AI can help you write copy. YouTube can teach you almost anything.

But there’s still a difference between being able to do something and doing it professionally.

Good typography, responsive layouts, image optimisation, accessibility, page speed, conversion-focused UX and clean development aren’t always obvious until they’re done badly.

Using someone who does this stuff every day usually produces a better result – and saves you learning everything the hard way.

6. You can scale support up and down

Scalability and Flexibility

Some months are quiet.

Others are chaos.

Maybe you’re launching a new product, attending an exhibition, producing a new brochure, rebuilding part of the website and running a promotion at the same time.

That’s when having extra capacity becomes useful.

Flexible support means you can increase the amount of help when there’s lots happening and reduce it when things calm down.

No recruitment process. No new permanent overhead. No inventing work for somebody because you’ve already hired them.

7. You reduce the pressure on your existing team

Risk Reduction

The alternative to outsourcing often isn’t hiring somebody.

It’s giving the work to whoever already looks least busy.

Suddenly your salesperson is updating WordPress, your office manager is designing social graphics and somebody who once mentioned Mailchimp is now responsible for the email campaign.

That’s not necessarily a great use of anybody’s time.

Giving specialist work to people who actually specialise in it lets your existing team concentrate on the jobs you employed them to do.

8. A fresh pair of eyes can spot things you’ve stopped seeing

Fresh Perspective and New Ideas

When you look at the same website every day, you stop noticing things.

An unclear headline. A clumsy enquiry form. An outdated page. An obvious missing call to action. A process that takes five steps when it could take two.

Someone coming to the business from outside doesn’t have that familiarity.

They see what a customer sees.

That outside perspective can be surprisingly useful – particularly when you’ve been doing something the same way for years simply because that’s how you’ve always done it.

9. You don’t have to keep up with every tool

Access to the Latest Tools & Technology

The list of software businesses are expected to understand seems to grow by the week.

WordPress. CRMs. Email platforms. Analytics. Automation. SEO tools. Design software. AI tools. Performance monitoring. Cookie consent. Forms. Integrations.

You don’t need to become an expert in all of them.

A good external team should already know which tools are worth using, how they fit together and – equally importantly – when you don’t need another bloody subscription.

10. You can spend more time growing the business

Increased Focus on Growth and Strategy

This is ultimately the point.

Outsourcing isn’t valuable because somebody else can resize an image or update a web page.

It’s valuable because you don’t have to.

Every hour you recover is an hour that can go into customers, sales, product development, partnerships, strategy – or simply finishing the day without another ten jobs hanging over you.

The aim isn’t to outsource everything.

It’s to stop spending your time on work that somebody else can do better and faster.
